Newbury opened their Papa John’s cup campaign with a convincing win against Supermarine.
The squad started strong with aggressive defence forcing Supermarine to make errors. Newbury were given an early scrum and number 8, Tilly Burn made light of the defensive efforts and gave winger, Jenny Buckley plenty of room to run in the blues first try.
The penalty count against both teams was high and Newbury attempted to gain ground with tactical kicks to touch. Defended fiercely by Supermarine, Newbury were able to get ball away from the line out and distribute the ball to allow Buckley to break the line and push the home team backwards.Newbury had momentum and with each carry of the ball they edged closer and closer to the try line. An attempt at grounding the ball was held up but Newbury recovered well and were able to cross the line having caught the in-field kick and crashing over the line with Kat Smith touching the ball down.
Newbury continued to dominate the attack trying to find space out wide but Supermarine utilised the touch line and were able to shut down any further advances from the Blues.
It took a quick tap penalty, looped out to speedster Buckley to get Newbury through to add further points to the board.
Although Newbury were constantly looking for gaps, Supermarine exploited a handling error which gave them the possession in the scrum. They freed the ball from the number 8’s feet quickly and made light work of the Blues’ defence as their winger flew down the far wing to score before the half was out.
The beginning of the second half saw both teams move the ball from both sides of the pitch, hunting for a way through the defence but no real advantage was gained by either side.
Finally, Newbury were able to break the deadlock of the second half with a try coming from the lineout as Megan Horwood found the gap between the forwards and fended off four defenders to break through. Chloe Hunt converted to bring the score to 5-22 to Newbury.
The Blues continued to show their strength and skill as back of the match, scrum half Hettie Martín-Hierro sniped from the back of a ruck in the middle of the park and chased her own grubber kick to touch down for Newbury’s fifth try of the game.
The Blues were continuing to have control of the game and were able to utilise the space that the tiring home team were leaving. A quick ball from the ruck, through the hands of Emily Stevens put a charging Becks Reeves from nearly half way, through the defence and under the posts.
The home team were not to go down without a final attempt at points as the final play of the game was set as a scrum to Supermarine. Quick and accurate hands shipped the ball to the winger who crossed the line to finish the game with a final try to Supermarine.
Final score, 10-36 to Newbury who progress onto the next stage of the cup.
